For Fans Only
LIVE
DaVid 2
On
the first day of his European tour in the autumn
of 2001, Dale Watson was invited to indulge in the
warm and intimate atmosphere of the New Road
studios in Wychen, The Netherlands, to actually
record the very first video for CRS' new DVD label
called DaViD (throwing great music at the big
world!): in front of a select group of enchanted
fans he added a new chapter to his impressive
discography, playing a set that was totally
different from the ones that graced his latest
live album Live At The Borderline (Continental
Song City 1018). Those present spoke of a historic
event: the intimacy of the session and the
enthusiasm of his hardcore fans created a special,
home-like atmosphere, that made Dale truly feel at
ease; his no-frills approach sure does thrive in
such a cosy, living room-like setting. He himself
and his ever-excellent Lone Stars (with Ricky
Davis outstanding on the steel guitar) rose to the
occasion and allowed the interaction between fans
and artists to take the music to rare heights.
Adding to the uniqueness of the occasion was
Dale's choice of material, coming up with a whole
lot of songs that he has never recorded before!
The overall standard of both intimacy and
musicianship is extraordinary; just keep an eye
out for his spine-tingler I Am Much Better Now,
which epitomizes Dale's present state of mind
after the misery that the start of the millennium
put him through. It is as if overcoming this dark
period has added a new dimension to both his
singing and his songwriting, for he has never
sounded warmer nor more determined. This DVD
recording shows the advocate of hardcore country
at his very best; the sublime combination of sound
and vision now enables the unfortunate absentees
to witness that legendary session too. |
