The Second Coming of Country Music
Category:  Concert Review

One week ago I said country music could be laid to rest with George Jones.  After seeing Dale Watson's show Friday (5/3) I realize that not only did I speak too soon, but country music is alive and well and in loving, capable hands. read more

June 24 David Letterman Show!

David Letterman ordered his assistant to book Honky Tonk Hero Dale Watson after hearing songs from El Rancho Azul on his car radio.  Watson & The Lonestars are scheduled to perform June 24th on The Late Show.  May in Texas may be shorts and t-shirt weather, but in Minnesota its still snowboots and longjohns - here's Dale after a May 2013 Minneapolis performance accepting the very first El Rancho Azul 8-Track tape from Red House Records' Jon Rodine and Luke Welsh.  It fades down during "Quick, Quick, Slow, Slow" to change to track 3, which Dale hilariously simulated live during the evening's performance. El Rancho Azul (released January 29, 2013) debuted on Billboard's Top Current Country Albums chart - a first in Watson's career and a first for the 30-year old Red House label.

Jan 8 2013

I just learned that my Sun Studio Sessions episode will be on in LA tonight. Sun Studio Sessions on KOCE SoCal PBS 50.2 "OC Channel" - Charter 314, Time Warner 235, Verizon Fios 470 - posting this video now as a promo:

I'll get another airing on a different LA station [KLCS] in Feb too.

Looks like Dallas late night this Friday night and Memphis on Saturday, will confirm asap. KERA PBS tv for Dallas, WKNO for Memphis.

Hi my friends,

It's been a year that is flying by. The latest CD The Sun Sessions has done really really well. Thank all of you for that. Sean Lane has done fantastic videos for every song and even documented the behind the scenes of that CD as well as the upcoming Dalevis: Sun Sessions 2.
Here's the maybe confusing part.

The next record out in Europe will be Dalevis: Sun Sessions 2, around January 2013. It's all original songs inspired by the Elvis songs that came out of Sun studios. It is a derivative record that completes the Sun Studio Tribute that covers more of the Elvis, Jerry Lee side of that history.

The same time frame , January 2013 will find a new release on Red House Records in the USA as well ,tentatively titled " I Lie When I Drink". This will be a straight forward Dale Watson album of course with all original songs with the Honky Tonk treatment. One song in particular has been requested for early release and Red House has been great at listening to your request and making it available now on iTunes.

The song is called " The Daughters Wedding Song' which I wrote inspired by the lack of father/daughter dance songs. Here's a link that explains it better.
"The Daughters Wedding Song"

Thanks again everyone for your support of this old dog doing old tricks. I'm having a blast living life on the honky tonk side and I hope to see yall on the road!!

Here's a nice bit about the single and upcoming album, on savingcountrymusic.com

FIRST I have a new weekly residence now every Wednesday ( when in town) at the Sahara Club (formerly T.C's) with a low $5 cover. It old old old school roadhouse blues place and a piece of old Austin charm. Come check it out and please spread the word.

The second thing I wanted to tell you all about is the Saturday Night at The Broken Spoke download.
It's a $5 download and a really great quality video. For those wanting a taste of a night at the Spoke but can't get there, here's your ticket.

Gig news , THIS SATURDAY- The Star Bar in Atlanta ,little five points area, with my old friend Slim Chance and the Convicts!!!

Thanks again for all the support and please look at the new tour dates being added daily!!

Adios Amigos,

Howdy y'all ,
Just a small update to let y'all know that during the run of Stephen King/ John Mellencamps , the Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, I mainly perform as The Zydeco Cowboy except on Tursday April 17th, where I play the central character , Joe. I encourage anyone planning to come see the play to get tickets early as they are selling fast.
On a more immediate note, me and the Lone Stars will be playing the Broken Spoke in Austin tonight for my only Texas show until May! Please let folks know in Austin.
I fly back to Atlanta on Sunday to continue rehearsals for the play, but will perform two shows while there. This Monday at Smithes Olde Bar and March 20 at Eddies Attic. Hope to see some Atlanta fans out at those two shows.
Thanks for letting me invade your inbox. God bless y'all and until we meet again , adios.

Well friends,
So many things to touch on! The Texas Two and me went back into the studio and hammered out Dalevis-The Sun Sessions 2 February 23rd.
All originals and leaning toward the Elvis side of Sun. My European Road managers ( and dear friends) Frank Van Velzen and Ron Bob came along as the Dutch Mafia to help us have more fun, haha. They succeeded !
Also, The Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County is in full rehearsal now and starts April 6th. I will fly back to Texas and play my only show March 10th at the world famous Broken Spoke in Austin! Please let folks know.
On a sadder note, we say good bye to Kurt Baumer, fiddle extraordinaire. It's been a pleasure to have had him in the band. Kurt plays with many bands and the Lone Stars interfered with that, so we reached the heartbreaking conclusion that we part ways. We wish him all the best, he is a great guy and awesome fiddle player.
The beat goes on and we will likely fill the fiddle position, but are not in a hurry to do so. Until next time my friends, keep checkin in here and on facebook, and let's keep truckin'!!

Your Honky Tonker,
Dale Watson

Howdy Folks,

mighty long time since I wrote y'all here. Seems FaceBook has been the main means of updating lately, but I'll try to change that by updating here more often.

First of course is the new CD The Sun Sessions. It's available here or the usual suspects, Amazon and itunes. I have made a video for every song on the CD which can be seen on youtube and will surely be available for purchase as a dvd in a short while. I'm very proud of Sean Lane who directed and produced all 14 videos including the Tiger Airways Video that went viral earlier this year. I think you will agree when you see the wide variety of visuals that Sean has put together to compliment the songs.

At this writing, I am preparing to take the Texas Two to Portland Oregon for The River City Music Festival January 6 and 7. Please tell everyone in that area if you can. It's the only trip there in over a year, maybe two. Immediately after that I take the Texas Two to Europe and Scandinavia for a 3 week tour and you can meet my European Road Manager ( and webmaster) Frank Van Velzen. These are the only shows of me and the Texas Two so it will be a rare and limited showcasing.

Lastly, I am taking time from February 27 to May 13th to perform in a Steven King/ John Mellencamp play in Atlanta Georgia at the Alliance Theatre called The Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County. For most of the plays run I am the Zydeco Cowboy , a small , but fun part. At least one day I will play the lead role of Joe. I want to encourage anyone who can to buy tickets for that day and come out and help me with some moral support. It's my first foray into theater and I could use some good ol friends out there cheering me on. That day I am told is....

TUESDAY - APRIL 17TH , 2012 !!

Please mark it on your calendar if at all possible you can come to that showing. The last day I play in Austin before I leave will be FEBRUARY 25TH at The Broken Spoke. That will be a helluva party!!!!

I do plan on trying to form some Atlanta and surrounding area shows for a couple of Mondays the play is dark, but I will surely post that here on the website, so please check in sometimes. I'll try to be better at the updates.

Thank you all for such an honor of having fans and friends like you to count on and being here to share this wild ride called life.

God Bless all y'all,

The Sun Sessions
Quotes and reviews

Here's a blurb from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, courtesy of David O'Brien...short but a great quote!

♣ Music that’s good: Fans of early Johnny Cash boom-chicka-boom sound, you gotta hearDale Watson’s new CD, The Sun Sessions.
Great stuff. One of the best country albums of the year.

"the sun sessions" by dale watson & the texas two proves that dale is
more than the spiritual heir of merle, buck and johnny---his music
has all the dim lights and beer mugs of the best honky tonk. nobody
can write better cheating or love songs than dale watson.
and nobody can sing them better either. nobody.

Gene Kurtz

To the Tune of Treat Her Right......

bout the finest man I ever met,
a musicians musician,
he was as good as they get,
he laid it down every night
and he treated you right

Every one called him gentle,
he could make you feel good,
If you knew then you loved him,
like you know that you should,
we were glad every night.
he treated us right

If you practice his method,
just as hard as you can,
you gonna get a reputation ,
as a damn good man,
and you'll know every night,
He treated you right yeah,

hey, hey hey hey....

You will be VERY VERY MISSED Gene Kurtz.
I Love you.

Red House Records signs Dale Watson

Dale recently signed with Red House and along with his band The Texas Two will release his new album The Sun Sessions on October 11th! Recorded at the famed Sun Studio in Memphis, Dale's 14 fresh originals evoke the sounds of Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and early Elvis.

Howdy friends,
Been a long time since an update and this is the first newsletter since having the new sign up link. First thing, please welcome the newest Lone Star to the band, Kurt Baumer on the fiddle. I've written some info about Kurt on the site already. Second, thanks to all the great folks that made the january tour so much fun. From Illinois to Wisconsin, Minnesota to Missouri and Oklahoma back to Texas, the shows were really well attended and just a blast. As you can see, obviously we were well cared for everywhere we went.
A very special thank you goes out to the folks at Nuss Mack Truck up in Sauk Rapids, Mn. For the second time they have saved us with their kindness. 25 below temperature took a toll on the bus air system. These guys are the best and has us up and running in time for the next show. Rollie was a great help as well.
We played Oneida Casino again, first time in a long time and it was especially fun doing the show with fellow Texans Heybale. You may have heard me and Redd Volkeart had an axe battle of sorts. It's always an education when redd gets on the stage. We come back to Oneida in June.
Louie at Lee's Liquor Lounge is still keepin' on. Yall folks up that way please keep your ear to the ground for Louie, as the city of Minneapolis is still trying to take his parking lot that he owns outright. Any letter you can write to the city council or to the City Pages on his behalf would really help. Please go by and say Hi to Louie for me. He means a great deal to me.
The Carryin' On record fell short this past year as the record company E1 closed it's country division a month after the record came out. Luckily I have it on a European label as well that still has an interest in keeping it out there. Yall know me though, and I keep on a rollin'. Honky Tonkers Don't Cry so I went into the lengendary Sun Studios and recorded another CD. It is done in the Tennesee Two vein, I guess more like the Texas Two, haha . Though it's already finished , I still have some EQ work to do on it and expect it to be out in June or early July.

Here in Austin Texas I am still doing my regular shows and even added another residency.

Monday nights    -The Continental Club from 10pm to 1:30am

Thursday nights
 -  Swang Thang with my Honky Tonk Horn Section at The Highball  8pm to 11pm

Sunday afternoons
-  Chicken $#!% Bingo at Ginny's Little Longhorn  4pm to 8pm

As of this moment there are no concrete plans for European shows but there are some negotiations in that regard. There is also current negotiations for a brief Australian tour to happen this year. I know we are doing festivals all over the USA this Summer and into  Fall so check in on the tour dates or twitter for any shows near you.
A few years ago Zalman King produced a documentary on an episode of my life called " Crazy Again". Many folks have asked over the years how to get a copy. Now it is available on Amazon.com as a rental instant view or to buy. This documentary deals with a dark time in my life when some of the bests songs I have ever written ( my own belief here) were born. Here is a link to that movie.

Lastly, I have written a travel guide for musicians, touring groups and anyone that travels and rooms with other folks that is now in Kindle and ibooks in ebook form and also available in physical book form on the website here. It's called
Road Warriors' Guide To Roommate Etiquette: common sense that's not-so common

Obviously if you are reading this on my website, you know that we finally resolved the Forbidden Access problem. Big thanks go out to our Road Manager Mark Tester for his help in this. I would put up a pic of Mark , but I have to finish the background check to make sure he isn't some CIA plant. Pic coming soon, unless you don't hear from me, then he may have turned out to be CIA. But Mark is by far my favorite Lone Star.
Thanks Yall,
See ya down the road!!!

Hi Mi Amigo’s,
As you see, I’m finally getting around to updating this site and hopefully stay better in touch with you all. A lot has been going on. The new record “ Carryin’ On This Way” is out and available online and in stores. I hope you all like it. There are a few re-recorded songs that longtime fans will recognize but I think you’ll agree the new versions are superior in quality and performance. Here you will see that I made the cover of this months CMP ( Country Music People) Magazine, Europes most successful country music magazine without a doubt. Thanks go out to those folks there , because I’m sure they know they could have thrown the Nashville faces on there and sold more, but they want to help our cause, so please buy one in support if at all possible.

The band. It has some changes. Here they are:

Fiddle: Kurt Baumer-
I have to thank my old friend and former Lone Star Gene Kurtz for giving me the heads up on Kurt and his amazing talent. He told me that Kurt had to be the most in-tune fiddler he ever heard and I have to agree. If you'd like to check out some of his playing then go to his website www.fiddletrax.com and listen to some samples. Kurt will still actively record for fiddletrax , so if you have a project that could use some outstanding fiddle, give him a holler. In the meantime, come introduce yourselves to the newest Lone Star as I have been bragging about having the best fans in the world, and I know it's true.
Though he's only been in the band a short time, Kurt is by far my favorite Lone Star :)

Drums:  Mike Bernal , the first hispanic Lone Star, from Lubbock Texas. He has played with many folks here in Texas, one of my favorite being Alan Haynes.
You’ll here his playing on the next record. He has a great feel for my music and is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He is without a doubt my favorite Lone Star in the Band.

Chris Crepps
Upright Bass:  Chris Crepps, the glue that made our band really come together. Great singer and super positive and fun guy to travel with around the world.
He has perfect pitch which has come in handy for him learning all the songs on my records and for when we make up songs on stage.
I’ll say it again, he also is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. He is without a doubt my favorite Lone Star in the Band.

The old guard, but still loved and appreciated........
Don-Don Pawlak
Pedal Steel Guitar:  Don Pawlak, or as we all call him Don-Don. He is currently serving a life sentence in my band and has already nailed down 7 years to date.
It looks like there is no hope of early parole as he has consistently killed on every song we play. We Love Don-Don. He is without a doubt my favorite Lone Star in the Band.

Larry Watson
And of course our Bus Driver,  Larry Watson, the most important Lone Star. Seem here with Jerry Jeff on the left. Of course,
he is without a doubt my favorite Lone Star in the Band.
